The Weight of Words: Choosing Healing Over Hurt
We've all stood at that precipice, haven't we? That moment where the words hang heavy in the air, a response poised on the tip of our tongue, fueled by pain, anger, or a deep-seated wound. Someone has triggered us, or perhaps they've simply recounted a story that reignites a familiar ache. We take that deep, shuddering breath, ready to unleash the torrent of hurt we've carried.
"Standing up for yourself," we rationalize. "Not letting them get away with it." Even, dare I say, "self-care." I’ve been there. Recently, a family member shared news of another, a source of long-buried childhood trauma, and their newfound happiness. The opportunity to vent, to detail every scar and every lingering pain, was right there.
But then, a simple truth, a lesson learned from countless sources, resonated within me: "Hurt people hurt people. Healed people heal people."
It's a profound concept, deceptively simple. We are all conduits, vessels of energy. And the energy we carry, we inevitably share. Do we choose to perpetuate the cycle of pain, or do we break it? Do we "give it back," releasing the hurt from our bodies, only to send it spiraling outwards, potentially back to ourselves? Or do we choose healing?
In that moment, faced with the choice, I paused. I allowed myself to feel the pain, to acknowledge its presence. I alchemized it, transforming it into something different, something more. I took the time to reflect, to ask myself: what energy do I want to contribute? What outcome do I truly desire?
And I chose healing.
My response was one of encouragement and empowerment. I offered tools for change, not just for this individual, but for the ripple effect it would have on everyone around them. Their choice, their interpretation, was beyond my control. But my intention, the energy I sent forth, was pure.
Words, after all, are like arrows. Once released, they find their target, leaving a lasting mark. You can apologize, you can try to retract them, but the wound remains. The hole, the scar, will always be there.
So, the next time you find yourself at that precipice, poised to release your arrows, PAUSE. Take a moment to consider the impact you wish to leave.
Our external world is a reflection of our internal landscape. If we can cultivate healing within ourselves, if we can choose our responses with intention and compassion, we can transform the world around us. We have the power to choose how we feel, and in turn, how we impact others. Let's choose wisely.
